Pokémon 3: The Movie (PG, 2000) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

When a reclusive professor named Spencer Hiro (voiced by Eric Stuart) goes missing in the Unown Temple, his daughter Molly (Madeleine Blaustein) falls into despair. Her desperation awakens a mysterious group of ancient Pokémon called the Unown, who respond to her emotions by creating an alternate reality where her father reappears and her dreams come true. But as Molly's fantasy world expands, it begins consuming the real world, trapping everyone outside in a cocoon of crystal and distorting reality itself. When Ash Ketchum (Veronica Taylor) and his friends become trapped in Molly's crystalline dreamscape, they must navigate a world that shifts with the young girl's emotional state. Ash discovers that Molly's illusion is powered by her subconscious desire to have her father back, and the only way to stop the Unown's reality-warping powers is to reach her heart and help her accept loss.

Directors Kunihiko Yuyama and Michael Haigney deliver the third Pokémon theatrical film, which deepens the franchise's emotional storytelling while expanding its visual spectacle. The 2000 film explores themes of grief, acceptance, and the power of imagination, treating Molly's desperate fantasy with empathy rather than judgment. The crystal world created by the Unown is visually stunning, with elaborate ice formations and gravity-defying architecture that showcases anime's creative potential. The supporting cast brings warmth to their characters, while Ash's journey to save Molly adds genuine stakes. The Pokémon battles remain exciting and colorful, particularly the encounters with Legendary Pokémon Entei and Unown. It's a film that works for both younger viewers enjoying the spectacle and older audiences appreciating its emotional maturity about processing loss and moving forward.
