Lucy Eleanor Moderatz (Sandra Bullock) works as a subway token collector, living a quiet, isolated life in New York City. Her only real connection is her cat, Mr. Jinks, and her unrequited love for a handsome commuter named Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher) whom she's never spoken to. When Peter is pushed onto the tracks and falls into a coma, Lucy impulsively claims to be his fiancée at the hospital—a lie told in a moment of panic that spirals into unexpected consequences.
