While You Were Sleeping (PG, 1995) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

Lucy Eleanor Moderatz (Sandra Bullock) works as a subway token collector, living a quiet, isolated life in New York City. Her only real connection is her cat, Mr. Jinks, and her unrequited love for a handsome commuter named Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher) whom she's never spoken to. When Peter is pushed onto the tracks and falls into a coma, Lucy impulsively claims to be his fiancée at the hospital—a lie told in a moment of panic that spirals into unexpected consequences. Before she can confess the truth, Peter's entire family—including his grandmother (Claudia Schiffer), his mother (Juliet Stevenson), and his sweet younger brother Jack (Bill Pullman)—welcomes Lucy with open arms. As Lucy finds herself becoming genuinely loved by this warm Italian-American family, she develops real feelings for the kind and attentive Jack. But when Peter awakes from his coma and shows romantic interest in Lucy, she must choose between the fantasy she created and the authentic love she's discovered.

Director Jon Turteltaub crafts a warmhearted romantic comedy that works because Sandra Bullock brings genuine vulnerability beneath Lucy's shyness. The 1995 film celebrates the healing power of family and human connection, treating Lucy's lonely existence with empathy rather than judgment. Bill Pullman shines as Jack, bringing warmth and understanding to a man who falls for Lucy not despite her eccentricities but because of her authenticity. The Callaghan family, particularly Claudia Schiffer as the spirited grandmother, creates a welcoming chaos that makes their acceptance of Lucy feel earned. Thom Eberhardt's cinematography captures New York's wintry beauty while the film's Italian family traditions add cultural warmth. The score by Randy Edelman underscores both romance and genuine emotion. It's a film about finding family and love in unexpected places, celebrating how honesty and connection matter more than perfect circumstances.
