Seven Nights of 007: The Man with the Golden Gun (PG, 1974) at The Revival House Perth

When a golden bullet engraved with "007" arrives at MI6, it signals that Francisco Scaramanga (Christopher Lee)—the world's most expensive assassin who charges a million dollars per kill—has targeted James Bond (Roger Moore). Rather than wait to be hunted, Bond goes on the offensive, tracking Scaramanga from Beirut to Macau to Thailand. His investigation becomes entangled with the search for a missing solar energy scientist whose technology could solve the oil crisis—or become a devastating weapon. Bond discovers Scaramanga operates from a private island in Thai waters, accompanied by his diminutive servant Nick Nack (Hervé Villechaize) and his captive mistress Andrea Anders (Maud Adams). As Bond closes in, he learns that Scaramanga views him as the only adversary worthy of a final duel—a showdown between two professional killers in a hall of mirrors where only one will emerge alive.

Director Guy Hamilton's fourth and final Bond film showcases Roger Moore's second outing as 007, leaning into the lighter, more comedic tone that would define his era. The 1974 film features one of cinema's most audacious stunts—the corkscrew car jump over a broken bridge, performed in one take by stuntman Bumps Willard. Christopher Lee brings aristocratic menace to Scaramanga, creating a villain who's Bond's dark mirror—a gentleman killer with twisted honor. The Thai locations provide exotic beauty, while the climactic funhouse duel delivers genuine tension. Britt Ekland provides comic relief as Bond's hapless assistant Mary Goodnight, and Hervé Villechaize is memorable as the cunning Nick Nack. While the film's kung fu subplot feels dated and the energy crisis plot lacks urgency, Lee's performance and the inventive action sequences make this an entertaining entry.
