The Borrowers at The Revival House Perth
Beneath the floorboards of a quiet London home lives a family of tiny people—the Clocks: father Pod (Jim Broadbent), mother Homily (Celia Imrie), and their adventurous teenage daughter Arrietty (Flora Newbigin). The Borrowers, as their kind are called, survive by "borrowing" everyday items from the human "beans" who live above, taking only what won't be missed. Their carefully hidden existence is threatened when evil lawyer Ocious P. Potter (John Goodman) schemes to demolish their house and evict the human Lender family to build luxury apartments. When the Lenders' young son Pete discovers the Clocks and befriends them, an unlikely alliance forms. As Potter's wrecking ball looms and he captures the tiny family for his own greedy purposes, the Borrowers must use their ingenuity, courage, and size to their advantage in a David-versus-Goliath battle to save their home.
Director Peter Hewitt brings Mary Norton's beloved children's novels to life with imaginative production design that transforms ordinary household objects into an elaborate miniature world. The 1997 film's greatest achievement is its seamless visual effects work—combining forced perspective, oversized sets, and early CGI to make the four-inch-tall Borrowers convincingly interact with human-sized environments. Jim Broadbent and Celia Imrie bring warmth and humor to the Clock parents, while John Goodman chews scenery delightfully as the cartoonish villain. The film balances slapstick comedy with genuine stakes, celebrating themes of family, home, and standing up to bullies regardless of size. Harry Gregson-Williams' whimsical score perfectly captures the magic of seeing the everyday world from a tiny perspective.
