OUTBREAK (M) Presented in 35mm Film
Outbreak at The Revival House Perth
When a deadly virus from the African jungle surfaces in a small California town, the clock starts ticking on a catastrophic epidemic. Army virologist Colonel Sam Daniels (Dustin Hoffman) and his team race to identify and contain the pathogen—a terrifying airborne strain of a disease similar to Ebola that kills within days. As the infection spreads exponentially and the military quarantines the town under martial law, Daniels discovers a darker conspiracy: his superior officer General Donald McClintock (Donald Sutherland) has known about this virus for decades and may be willing to sacrifice the entire town to protect a terrible secret. With time running out and a firebomb solution being prepared, Daniels must find the original host animal to create a cure before the government's drastic measures turn Cedar Creek into ground zero for mass murder.
Director Wolfgang Petersen brings taut thriller pacing to this 1995 medical disaster film that feels unnervingly prescient decades later. The ensemble cast—including Rene Russo as Daniels' ex-wife and fellow scientist, Morgan Freeman as his principled commanding officer, Kevin Spacey and Cuba Gooding Jr. as his team members—grounds the high-stakes scenario in human drama and ethical dilemmas about sacrifice versus salvation. Petersen's direction balances edge-of-your-seat suspense with procedural authenticity, showing how quickly civilization's veneer can crack under biological threat. The film's most thrilling sequence—a harrowing helicopter chase through a canyon—delivers pure action spectacle amidst the medical emergency, while James Newton Howard's pulsing score amplifies the mounting tension.
