In Mexico City, where kidnapping has become a lucrative industry, burned-out former CIA operative and assassin John Creasy (Denzel Washington) reluctantly accepts a job as bodyguard to nine-year-old Pita Ramos (Dakota Fanning), daughter of a wealthy businessman. Initially distant and hardened by his dark past, Creasy slowly warms to the precocious girl's persistent affection, finding unexpected redemption in their growing bond. But when Pita is kidnapped despite his protection, Creasy is left for dead in the brutal ambush. Surviving his wounds and consumed by guilt and rage, he embarks on a merciless campaign of vengeance against everyone involved in the kidnapping, methodically dismantling Mexico City's criminal underworld one brutal interrogation at a time.
Director Tony Scott brings his signature kinetic visual style to this 2004 revenge thriller, employing rapid cuts, saturated colors, and disorienting camera work that mirrors Creasy's fractured psyche. Washington delivers one of his most powerful performances, transforming from a suicidal alcoholic to a surrogate father to an unstoppable angel of death—his quiet scenes with Fanning are heartbreaking, making his later violence feel justified and cathartic. Christopher Walken provides world-weary support as Creasy's old friend, while Giancarlo Giannini and Radha Mitchell round out the exceptional cast. Harry Gregson-Williams' pulsing score and Scott's Mexico City—captured in harsh sunlight and shadowy corruption—create an unforgettable backdrop for this tale of redemption through retribution.
