WIZARDS (M) Presented in 35mm Film
Wizards at The Revival House Perth
Ten million years after nuclear war devastates Earth, two brothers born to the fairy queen represent opposing visions for the world's future. Avatar, a benevolent but scruffy wizard, believes in magic and peace, while his twin Blackwolf embraces technology and fascism, ruling over a mutant army from the blasted wastelands of Scorch. When Blackwolf unearths ancient Nazi propaganda films and weaponizes them to inspire his troops toward conquest, Avatar must journey across the post-apocalyptic landscape with a ragtag group of allies—including the warrior fairy Elinore, the elf assassin Weehawk, and the robot Peace—to stop his brother's war machine before darkness consumes what remains of civilization.
Ralph Bakshi's audacious 1977 animated fantasy is unlike anything before or since, blending traditional hand-drawn animation with rotoscoped live-action, psychedelic imagery, and shocking juxtapositions of whimsy and violence. The visionary director of Fritz the Cat and The Lord of the Rings creates a fever dream of fantasy and science fiction that tackles weighty themes about technology, propaganda, and the cyclical nature of fascism through a kaleidoscope of animation styles. With character designs ranging from Vaughn Bodē's voluptuous fairies to grotesque mutants, and a narrative that swings from slapstick comedy to genuine horror, Wizards remains a singular cult classic that pushed the boundaries of what animation could say and show.
