AUSTRALIA (M) presented in 35mm
Australia - Revival House Perth Event Bio
Baz Luhrmann swings for the fences with his sprawling 2008 epic—an unapologetically romantic adventure that throws everything at the screen: cattle drives, aerial bombing, stolen generations, and Nicole Kidman in fabulous hats. This is Luhrmann doing what he does best: creating cinema as heightened spectacle where every emotion is operatic and every landscape looks like a postcard painted by God.
Kidman stars as Lady Sarah Ashley, a prim English aristocrat who travels to northern Australia in 1939 to confront her husband about selling their cattle station. When she arrives to find him murdered and the ranch on the brink of collapse, she teams with rough-hewn drover (Hugh Jackman, shirtless as often as possible) to drive 2,000 head of cattle across brutal terrain to Darwin. Caught in their story is Nullah (Brandon Walters), a mixed-race boy facing forced removal under Australia's assimilation policies.
Luhrmann shoots the Australian outback like a fantasy realm—impossibly red dirt, endless horizons, and sweeping helicopter shots set to soaring orchestral music. The film careens from romantic comedy to war epic to Indigenous rights drama, somehow holding together through pure cinematic audacity and stunning production design. The bombing of Darwin sequence is genuinely spectacular, while the relationship between Sarah and Nullah provides the film's emotional core.
Is it overwrought? Absolutely. Is it manipulative? Shamelessly. But Luhrmann's earnest romanticism and visual maximalism create something uniquely entertaining—a throwback to Old Hollywood epics with contemporary sensibilities about Australia's complicated history.
Big emotions, bigger landscapes, and Baz being Baz.
