50 FIRST DATES (PG) Presented in Glorious 35mm
50 First Dates at Revival House Perth
Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore reunite for their sweetest collaboration—a high-concept romantic comedy with genuine heart that asks what it means to fall in love when one person can't remember yesterday. This 2004 charmer proves Sandler could balance silly humor with real emotion when he wanted to.
Sandler plays Henry Roth, a Hawaiian marine veterinarian with commitment issues who falls hard for Lucy (Barrymore), a local art teacher he meets at a diner. The morning after their perfect first date, Lucy has no memory of meeting him. She suffers from short-term memory loss after a car accident, living the same day over and over, unaware that time is passing. Every morning her memory resets, and Henry must make her fall in love with him all over again.
What could've been a one-joke premise becomes surprisingly touching, as director Peter Segal finds genuine pathos in Henry's daily courtship ritual. The Hawaiian setting adds sun-drenched romance, while the supporting cast—including Rob Schneider (actually funny here), Sean Astin, and Blake Clark as Lucy's protective father—grounds the fairy tale in real relationships.
Barrymore brings warmth and vulnerability to a character who could've been just a plot device, while Sandler shows the patience and creativity that real love requires. Yes, there are walrus gags and Sandler's usual juvenile humor, but underneath is a film about choosing to love someone despite impossible circumstances.
The ending will get you. They always do when Sandler tries.
