FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (R 18+) Presented in 35mm
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas at Revival House Perth
Buckle up for Terry Gilliam's hallucinogenic journey into the American Dream! Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro deliver unforgettable performances as journalist Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo, embarking on a drug-fueled odyssey through 1970s Las Vegas in search of the mythical American Dream. Armed with a briefcase full of pharmaceuticals and a rented red convertible, they careen through Sin City in a haze of paranoia and chemical-induced madness.
Based on Hunter S. Thompson's seminal work of gonzo journalism, Gilliam's 1998 adaptation captures the author's unique blend of dark comedy, social commentary, and psychedelic excess. Depp's portrayal of Thompson's alter ego is both hilarious and disturbing, while del Toro's manic performance as the unpredictable Samoan lawyer creates one of cinema's most memorable odd couples.
Gilliam's surreal visual style perfectly complements Thompson's stream-of-consciousness narrative, using distorted lenses, bizarre makeup effects, and nightmarish imagery to recreate the protagonists' altered states. The film serves as both a trip through the counterculture of the 1960s and a savage indictment of the Nixon era.
